What Are IUDs?

IUD stands for Intrauterine Device. It is a Long Active Reversible Contraceptive. There are two kinds of IUDs - Hormonal and non-hormonal (copper). Both offer 99% effectiveness in preventing pregnancies. They generally last for 5-10 years(depending on the brand), and normal fertility returns immediately after removal, so are a great non-permanent option. Hormonal IUDs are also helpful for women with heavy periods as they can lighten or stop menstruation.

IUD Insertion Procedure

Once you have spoken to your GP and decided on an IUD, the IUD insertion process can begin. It is common to feel some discomfort however this is short lived. Once the IUD has been inserted, a follow-up appointment is made to ensure everything is working smoothly at around 6 weeks. At this appointment the doctor will check that the threads of the IUD are visible at the cervix, and discuss any issues or concerns you might have. If everything is fine, you will not need to see your doctor about the IUD for 5 years.

IUD Removal Procedure

IUD Removal Procedure is a simpler process than insertion. As long as the threads of the IUD are still visible at the cervix, your doctor will be able to simply remove the IUD with forceps. The procedure only lasts a couple of minutes and may only cause minor discomfort. If the threads are not visible then an ultrasound may be necessary, or a referral to a gynaecologist to remove the IUD.
After the procedure there should be no side-effects and normal fertility should recover immediately.
