What Happens Before Medical Termination?

Abortion Clinic Wollongong

Firstly, the Doctor will need to take a scan and a blood test to confirm the pregnancy, that it is located in the uterus and that it is between 5 to 9 weeks along.

Once the results are available the Doctor prescribes the first medication which is needed to be taken in the clinic with the doctor. This is a progesterone blocker which causes the fetus to detach from the uterine wall. This medication has mild side effects that can include nausea, cramping, or some bleeding.

What Happens During Medical Termination?

36 to 48 hours after the appointment, the second medication is to be taken: In order to take this a window of at least 12 hours will need to be set aside, with easy access to a bathroom and within one hour of a hospital (in case of rare complications).

Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract, and can cause heavy bleeding and cramping. Symptoms begin within 1 to 6 hours after taking the medication and can persist for up to 24 hours. The pain can vary from mild period pain to more discomforting pain. Pain medication such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can be used for any mild discomfort.

What Happens After Medical Termination?

After taking the Misoprostol, intermittent bleeding may occur for the next 3 to 4 weeks. A follow-up appointment with the doctor is necessary to confirm the termination is complete. There is also a small risk that fragments of tissue or clotting can remain in the uterus, and this can be sorted by the doctor.
