What Is A Hearing Test?

A hearing (audiology) test examines how well your hearing functions and performs. The test measures your ability to hear sounds of different pitches and volume to help determine if there are any issues with your hearing and guide treatment options.

Many people incorrectly think they need to visit a dedicated audiology centre to have their hearing tested. But your GP can ask a series of preliminary hearing questions and perform basic hearing tests during your check-up.

How Are Hearing Tests Performed?

A hearing test is a simple, painless, and quick procedure that can be done at the doctors office. There are various hearing tests available depending on what your doctor wants to test for. Some common tests include:

// Pure tone test – Test of how loud a tone needs to be for you to hear it. A machine plays tones and beeps at increasingly louder volumes until you press a button indicating you have heard the tone.
// Speech discrimination test – Test of how well you can hear spoken language. An audio sample will be played in which you are asked to repeat what was said.
// Tuning fork test – Test of how well you hear vibrations using a 2 pronged metal tuning fork that produces a one when it vibrates. Sometimes a bone oscillator machine is used to measure and record how well the tone passes through the bone to your inner ear.
