Share Maternity Care With Your GP For A More Comfortable Pregnancy Experience

With shared care, you can see your same GP or maternity team for most of your pregnancy visits. Shared care is a popular choice for women with low-risk pregnancies.

What Is Antenatal Shared Care?

Antenatal Shared Care is an opportunity to have some of their pregnancy care shared between their general practitioner and the antenatal clinic (or Midwife/Birth center). Shared care allows pregnant women to seek the care of a GP they know and trust.

Having a known carer during pregnancy has been found to result in fewer hospital admissions and higher satisfaction with the birthing experience. The doctors at King Street Medical enjoy being part of the antenatal journey with their patients. They understand it can be a stressful time and can help you to navigate the sometimes confusing system. They work closely with the surrounding hospitals to provide tailored care.

Who Is Eligible For Shared Care?

The shared care program is accessible to any healthy, low-risk pregnant women with no pre-existing conditions (such as diabetes). If any problems were to occur, your doctor would transfer you to the hospital’s antenatal clinic.

The Pregnancy

Your GP will typically see you once a month until 28 weeks of pregnancy, and every two weeks after that until 36 weeks of pregnancy. From here until the baby is born you are requested to visit every week.

In the early stages, assessments are made to ensure the baby is developing well and in the correct position, or there are any other aspects of care that need specialised attention. Your GP will ask a range of questions about your current health, family history, and perform physical examinations, blood, and urine tests.

Any care relating to the birth itself will usually occur at the hospital or birth center. The doctors at King Street Medical work very closely with your maternity hospital of choice.

After Birth

King Street Medical recommends follow up visits from about 4 weeks after birth to ensure you and your baby are healthy and identify any early warning signs. Your doctor will provide you with an immunisation schedule and book subsequent check ups at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months then 4 years.

King Street Medical strives to ensure both you and your baby are healthy and happy. Call us today or book your antenatal appointment online.
