How To Protect Your Skin This Summer & Beat The Heat

Australia has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world. The UV (Ultraviolet) index is very high in Australia, which can severely damage the skin leading to multiple types of skin cancer.

It only takes about 15 min of unprotected exposure to damage the cells of the skin. So before you head outside, make sure you are protected. Here are some ways to protect yourself this summer and enjoy the sun safely.

Use Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen regularly is one of the most important ways to protect yourself against the sun’s harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays. Choose a sunscreen with a minimum of 30-50 SPF (Sun Protection Factor), applying at least 15 minutes before going out into the sun or water, and re-applying every 2 hours, or after swimming.

Wear UVA & UVB Sunglasses

Protect your eyes and the delicate skin around your eyes by always wearing protected sunglasses when out in the sun. Wrap-around sunglasses work best as they block the most amount of sun.

Perform Regular Skin Checks

Make note of any moles and birthmarks and track any movements or new skin changes. Make sure you have a skin check as part of your yearly medical checkup. Early detection and treatment or warning signs with your skin is the best way to prevent skin cancer.

Put On A Hat

Wearing a wide-brimmed hat is essential for protecting the delicate skin around your ears, nose, neck, and face.

Seek Out Shade

Bring along a tent, canopy, or find shade from trees, buildings, or umbrellas. Just keep in mind that sunlight (and harmful UV rays) bounce off surfaces, so you can’t just rely on shade for your sun protection.

Avoid Peak Sun Hours

Avoid the sun as much as possible during the peak hours when the sun’s UV index is highest. At these mid-day times, it’s even more important to use all available measures to protect yourself from the sun.

Stay Hydrated

Hydrated skin provides increased natural sun protection and also prevents sunstroke.

Be Careful Of Certain Medications 

Certain medications increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun. It’s essential to check with your local doctor or pharmacist any medications you are taking for these side effects before going into the sun. The most common of these medications include antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anti-inflammatories.
