Dental Check-Ups, Scale, & Polish Teeth Cleaning

Regular Dentist Visits Help Maintain Healthy Smiles

Australians know that brushing and flossing regularly contribute to good oral health.  But brushing and flossing alone is not enough to ensure you continue to maintain your healthy smile.

Many people do not have the recommended regular check-ups they need to ensure good oral health.  Regular dental check-ups, scaling, and polishing are essential for overall dental health. By having regular check-ups, your dentist can detect any issues before they become a problem.

Scaling and polishing provide a deeper level of cleaning than can be achieved through regular brushing and flossing. X-rays are used to assist the dentist in identifying the internal structure of your teeth.

At King Street Dental, your comfort is our top priority.  We use only the latest scaling and polishing technology and practice safe and gentle techniques so you can relax during your routine check-ups, and keep your smile confident and healthy.

What Is A Dental Check-Up?

A dental check-up is an examination and assessment of your overall oral health.  This includes looking at your teeth, gums, throat, tongue, and cheeks, to determine if there are any signs of decay or disease that could lead to more serious problems later on.

Before the assessment, your dentist checks any notes from your previous visits and updates the records with new information.

During the assessment, your dentist checks for things such as cavities, cracks, chips, tooth decay, gum disease and plaque or tartar build-up. Special tools check the spaces between the teeth.

Dental Teeth Cleaning

A scaling and cleaning often accompany a dental check-up. Certain areas do not get the proper cleaning they need, even with regular brushing and flossing. A build-up of plaque and tartar can cause a range of oral health issues if left untreated.

During your cleaning, your dental hygienist uses specialized instruments to gently remove any plaque or tartar and do a deep clean of each tooth. A polish removes stains and makes the tooth look shiny and new. Floss removes any particles stuck between your teeth.

What Happens After My Check-up?

After your checkup and cleaning, your dentist tells you about any issues they have found, and what treatment they recommend.  If any problems are found, you may require a return visit.  Your King Street Dentist always takes the time to explain all options available and make sure all of your questions are answered.

Do I Need Dental X-Rays?

The use of X-Rays is fairly standard practice during your check-up.  If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, it is highly recommended to have an X-Ray to help the dentist get the clearest picture of your overall dental health.

Fissure Sealants

Fissure sealants are thin protective layers applied to the grooves (or fissures) of molars (chewing teeth.  These teeth are more susceptible to decay, rot, and cavities. Fissure sealants are a quick, easy, and painless procedure, and often recommended for children to protect their first chewing teeth.

How Often Should I Get A Check-up?

In general, we recommend you visit the dentist every 6 months to maintain proper oral health and check for signs of damage or decay.

Do I Need My Medical History?

If you are a first-time patient, a proper examination of your dental history is important.  If you have a history of certain illnesses or diseases, your dentist may alter the treatments or recommend different products.

If you are taking any medication, you should tell your dentist before any procedure, as certain personal and dental medications should not be mixed.

How Can I Maintain Good Oral Health?

Regular check-ups and cleaning help you take proper care of your smile. But it’s equally important that you practice good oral hygiene at home between your dental visits. Here are some ways to keep your smile healthy at home.

//  Brush your teeth at least twice per day for 2 minutes each time using toothpaste

//  Floss your teeth at least once per day

//  Eat healthy and avoid sugary drinks and foods

//  Use a mouthguard when playing contact sports

//  Avoid smoking

//  Schedule regular 6-month dental check-ups and cleaning.
