Correcting Your Misaligned Teeth & Bite

If you’re feeling a bit self-conscious about a crooked or misaligned smile, you’re not alone.  Most people do not have perfectly aligned teeth, and while millions of Australians are familiar with the use of braces or to help straighten their teeth, not everyone is getting the treatment they need.

Orthodontics can help improve the health and function of your teeth and jaw, making it easier to maintain good oral hygiene. Orthodontics will reduce the risk of gum disease and decay and help you achieve the smile of your dreams.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the diagnosis and treatment of problems related to misaligned teeth and bites.  Making sure your teeth and jaw are straight do much more than improve your smile.  A misaligned bite can lead to serious problems down the track such as pain and discomfort, and uneven chewing that may grind and wear away your teeth.

What Issues Can Orthodontics Fix?

There is a wide range of issues that can be fixed with the help of orthodontics.  If you have any of these issues, speak with a King Street Dental team member today and book your free consultation.

//  Crowding - The teeth do not have enough room to grow evenly.

//  Spacing - There is too much open space between the teeth.

//  Underbite – The lower jaw protrudes over the upper jaw.

//  Overbite – The upper jaw protrudes over the lower jaw.

//  Midline Mismatch – The teeth do not align properly.

Orthodontic Treatment In Children

We recommend that children between ages 8-10 have an orthodontic check-up to evaluate the teeth formation and determine if they need treatment.  Early detection and treatment of misaligned teeth means a more straightforward treatment later on, taking less time to correct any issues.

Orthodontic Treatment In Adults

Braces and other orthodontic treatments are not just for children. We see many adults who either did or did not have orthodontics as children. With advancements in technology, treatments are now cheaper, and less visible than ever. Misaligned teeth and bites affect much more than your smile, and can lead to serious health issues down the track if left untreated.

Types of Orthodontics

Metal Braces

Metal braces (also known as traditional braces) consist of metal brackets and wires that attach to each tooth and are adjusted as required. Modern braces are much smaller and less noticeable then they used to be.  They are the least expensive option and still the most common type of braces used today.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are one of the most popular orthodontic teeth straighteners for adults. Often known as the popular brand name Invisalign, these “invisible braces” are custom-fit to your teeth and function by gently applying consistent pressure to correct the position of the patient's teeth.

Benefits to clear aligners

//  Removable, and easy to take out for brushing your teeth and eating

//  Custom-made to your teeth and more comfortable than metal braces.

//  Nearly invisible and much less obvious.

Clear Essix Retainer

Essix retainers are removable clear plastic moulds that prevent your teeth from moving position over time. Essix retainers are generally used after braces or clear aligners and are a popular choice because they are clear and aesthetically pleasing. They are very light and more comfortable than traditional metal retainers and do not irritate your gums.

Like clear aligners, they are custom-made to your mouth and may cover all of your teeth or a group of teeth.
