Dental Crowns & Bridges

Fixed Solutions To Damaged Or Missing Teeth

If your teeth have become cracked, worn down, or stained over the years, a dental crown or bridge may be a solution for you.  A crown or bridge can restore the strength of your teeth, and prevent further damage or loss of teeth without the need for surgery.

At King Street Dental, your crown or bridge is expertly fitted and matched with the rest of your teeth to restore a natural smile that looks and feels great.

What Is A Dental Crown

A dental crown (also known as a cap) is a metal or ceramic fitting that is placed over an existing tooth.  A crown acts as a shield to protect a damaged tooth from the continued strain from chewing, which could cause the tooth to weaken to the point of needing removal.

When a tooth has already suffered damage, either due to cracking, a previous filling, or protection after a root canal, a crown is usually put in. Once the crown is attached, the tooth is strengthened and functions like natural healthy teeth

Dental crowns can also be used on healthy teeth to improve their cosmetic look by changing their shape or colour.  It is a popular option for people whose teeth are not straight or have become discoloured.

What Is A Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is put in when a tooth is missing.  A bridge combines three crowns into one structure, with the middle crown replacing the missing tooth.  The teeth on either side of the missing tooth must be healthy and strong enough to support the bridge.  A thorough examination by your dentist determines if a bridge is the best option.

A bridge is a cheaper and less invasive alternative to an implant, as it does not need surgery to be attached.

What Are Crowns And Bridges Made Of?

Metal Crowns

Metal crowns have been in use since the early 1900s, and are usually made from a gold alloy.  Metal crowns are generally put on teeth that are not as visible, or require a stronger material.  Metal crowns are easy to put in, and require the least amount of tooth preparation.

Ceramic Crowns

A ceramic (or porcelain) crown is made from high strength ceramic materials and mimics the natural look and feel of natural teeth. Different teeth will require different types of ceramics.  Harder strength materials are needed for the back teeth that are subject to more chewing impact, while the front teeth are a more aesthetically pleasing and natural-looking ceramic material.

A Metal-ceramic crown or bridge combines the strength of a metal base with the aesthetics of a ceramic coating.  They are most common in bridges where teeth are visible, but require higher flexibility.

Fitting A Crown Or Bridge

Before deciding to get a crown or bridge, x-rays are taken and inspection done to see if the existing teeth are strong enough to support them.  If they are, scans of your teeth are taken and the crown or bridge is prepared.

During the procedure, a patient is given a local anaesthetic to ensure there is no pain and they are in a relaxed state.

Next, the existing tooth is shaved down to just smaller than the crown for it to fit properly.  The dentist creates grooves in the existing tooth which the crown or bridge slips into, ensuring there is no movement.  Around 2 weeks later, you will return to have your dental crown fit.

Crown & Bridges FAQs

How Long Will the Procedure Take?

The preparation appointment takes 60 to 90 minutes where the tooth is shaved and the scans are taken. The fitting appointment usually takes 30 to 40 minutes.

How Long Do Crowns & Bridges Last?

A crown or bridge typically will last upwards of 15 years if a patient properly maintains good oral health. Your dentist provides all relevant information on how to properly care for your crown or bridge. We recommend coming in for regular check-ups every 6 months to ensure your crown or bridge continues to be securely fit.
