Children's Dentistry

Comprehensive & Gentle Care For Children Of All Ages

Most adults understand the importance of practicing good oral care and attending regular dental visits.  Likewise, children need to visit the dentist regularly. Parents are encouraged to bring their children in for dental visits as soon as they get their first teeth and to continue having regular check-ups throughout their childhood.

Paediatric Dentistry at King Street Dental

Childhood is the most important time for dental development, with regular 6-12 month check-ups the best way to ensure your child’s proper dental health. We also know that taking a small child to the dentist for the first time can be a bit stressful, which is why we provide extra care and attention to make the experience as comfortable as possible for the whole family.

Along with prevention and treatment, we focus on providing education to parents so they are up to date and informed about good health care products and practices. Together, we help ensure your child has a lifetime of healthy smiles ahead.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

The Australian Dental Association recommends that a child should have their first visit no later than their first birthday. The primary focus of the first visit is to get you and your child familiar with our staff and facilities. Regular non-treatment visits will allow us to establish rapport with your child and help them gain confidence for their regular dental visits.

Once in the chair, we go through a visual examination to make sure there are no problems, using fun games and toys to help make the experience more gentle and pleasant.  Along with the examination, your dentist takes you through an oral care plan for your child, which includes:

//  Proper nutrition for healthy teeth and gums

//  Habits such as thumb sucking

//  Proper brushing techniques

//  General teeth and gum care

//  A growth and development plan

//  Preventative Strategies

Before leaving, you will have a clear idea of:

//  Your child's general oral health

//  How to care for your child's oral health

//  When your next appointment is scheduled for

A Child-Friendly Experience

Making a good first impression is important, which is why the staff at King Street Dental work hard to make your child’s first dental experience fun and exciting. From the moment you walk in the doors, you are and your child will feel comfortable and at ease. Our facilities include:

//  A designated children’s area with activity books and learning opportunities.

//  Floor to ceiling murals of Illawarra’s landscape

//  TVs mounted on the ceiling so your child can watch their favourite movies in the dental chair

//  Dental gift pack for your child to help them look after their teeth at home

How To Prepare Your Child For Their First Dental Visit

Preparation is key to a smooth and stress-free first dental experience for your child. There are several things we recommend you do before your visit to help get them prepared.

//  Visual Preparation – You can introduce your child to us before their visit by showing them friendly pictures of our staff and facilities through our website.

//  Explain that everyone sees a dentist – Make sure your child knows that going to the dentist is normal, and that mum, dad, and siblings all have check-ups often.

//  Reassurance – Tell your child you will be with them the whole time.

//  Bring them along to your check-up – Having your child see you or a sibling in the dentist chair can make the process more familiar when it’s their turn.

//  Make appointments in advance – Give your child lots of time to mentally prepare for the visit.

//  Talk positively about the dentist – Being positive about your experience at the dentist can make your child look forward to their visit.

Schedule Ongoing Paediatric Dentistry Visits

After your child has had their first visit, it’s important to book in regular check-ups every 6-12 months.  If there are any issues discovered during the first visit, your dentist will discuss the appropriate actions to be taken.

Subsequent visits will usually include a very gentle cleaning, fluoride treatment, and checking their teeth and gums for any potential issues.  We focus on forming a positive relationship with your child from the start and give them proper instructions for brushing and overall oral care.  We are trained and equipped to handle any dental emergency needs your child may have as well.  A member of our friendly staff can help you book your next appointment.

Children's Oral Care Tips At Home

You are a crucial part of your child’s oral health, and practicing good care between dental visits will help make sure their smile is the best it can be.

//  A healthy diet is crucial for healthy oral development.  Try to avoid sugary drinks and feed them a variety of healthy, whole foods.

//  After the age of 2, give them a pea-sized drop of toothpaste when they brush.  Fluoride is good for strong teeth and gums, and protects against tooth decay.

//  Routine is important for your child.  Ensure your child’s teeth are brushed gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush every morning and before bed.

//  If your child chips, cracks or loses a tooth, seek immediate action, as permanent damage can occur if left untreated.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, known as the CDBS, is an Australian program that can provide up to $1000 in rebates for your child’s dental care over 2 years. These benefits can include routine check-ups, cleaning, x-rays, and several other more specialised treatments.

To find out more about this program and see if your child is eligible, visit the Department of Human Services website at:

Your child should know from an early age that routine teeth cleaning and check-ups and good oral hygiene are an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Preventative Dental

Fissure Sealants

This is a very common treatment done to the back teeth of young children from around the age of five or six. Often these teeth have an intricate system of fissures, grooves and/or pits that can potentially be left uncleaned due to the limitations of a simple toothbrush. This can result in a reservoir for bacteria, which may lead to rapid decay.

Fissure Sealant Application is a pain free procedure that will prevent decay. It is achieved by cleaning the deep grooves and pits, isolating the tooth/teeth, then applying a thin coat of a dental material to seal them.
